One of my favorite medium is graphite pencil. I am definitely "in love" with my pencil. I had the fortune to have an illustrator instructor who would push me to take my traditional medium and put it into digital form. From there, she encouraged me to experiment with color, texture, text, etc. She created a monster.

This is a personal piece created from the concept of Hare-As-Death-Messenger. I am astounded at some of the responses I have received from this piece. People see this as not only the hares taking over in our post-apocalyptic world, but also as the undying devotion of a rabbit guarding his owner in that same post-apocalyptic world.

The finished product was inspired by World War II propaganda posters; most notably the Ministry of Defense posters produced by the United Kingdom.

HARVEST CRONE

In many cultures, rabbits and/or hares are viewed as messengers and escorts to the shadow lands. I wanted to capture the crone as a figure of death, holding his/her rabbit like a child.

The moon is full over a ripe harvest. These are both indicators of fecundity and life. The figure is walking away. In the background the crow, also a messenger of death, flies towards the heavens.

The garments are Celtic in nature, celebrating my own ancient heritage. The crown of straw represents the royal, the spiritual and the wise.

HARVEST CRONE DETAIL

Throughout my studies I found one of the most interesting archetypes to be "the blind prophet." This character appears many times in literature. The most famous is perhaps Sophocles' "Tiresias" in Oedipus the King. Tiresias is blind, but he is the only character who "sees" the truth of the play. It is interesting to note that the third play of this trilogy Oedipus at Colonus has Oedipus himself gaining the gift of prophecy after he blinds himself.
